Chiane Esther Maluleke

Chiane has widespread experience and understanding in the area of Child care.  She is a professional social worker with 8 years of experience as the Director of the National Department of Health’s Gender Focal Point. She is a member of the South African Women in Mining Association (SAWIMA) and has worked extensively on human rights and gender policy. Chiane has successfully established Gender Focal Points in all nine provincial Departments of Health with full and permanent staff compliments.

She has also successfully facilitated and coordinated a process of developing sectoral Gender Policy Guidelines in line with the National Policy Framework for Women’s Empowerment and Gender Equality. Chiane has also been responsible for the following accomplishments:

  • Engagement in extensive training and capacity building programmes and initiatives on Gender Focal Persons from all nine provinces on all aspects of Gender and Health, including Gender Auditing in collaboration with the University of Pretoria and the ILO (International Labour Organisation)
  • The development and establishment of monitoring and evaluation systems in the Department of Health which assist in ensuring that gender issues are routinely considered in departmental strategic planning exercises
  • Responsibility for organising and participating in major gender mainstreaming related, community mobilization national and international campaigns and commemorative events such as the 16 Days of No Violence Against Women and Children, Women’s Month and International Women’s Day
  • Gender Auditing: using the participatory gender-auditing tool, to assist organisations in considering whether internal practices and related support systems for gender mainstreaming are effective
